The optics of the eye create a focused two-dimensional image of the visual world on the retina, which then processes that image within the retina and sends nerve impulses along the optic nerve to the visual cortex to create visual perception. The retina serves a function which is in many ways analogous to that of the film or image sensor in a camera.

WebVisual pathway. The photoreceptors (rods and cones) in the retina are stimulated by photons of light entering the eye. Light-sensitive surface membrane proteins (e.g. rhodopsin) of these cells are stimulated to propagate second messenger responses which convert light energy into electrical signals. The photoreceptors synapse with retinal bipolar cells, which … WebDescribe and explain the differences between rod and cone cells in their sensitivity and acuity. Cones respond to colour, rods respond black and white. Cones require a higher light intensity to respond. Cones have greater acuity and rods have lower acuity. Cones connected singly to bipolar cells so brain receives nerve impulses from small area.
