WebThe Wittenham Shield dates from the Later Bronze Age (c.1200-700 BC) and was found in the River Thames to the north of Long Wittenham village. It is made of sheet bronze with raised ridges and a round boss. The ridges were designed to deflect weapons. WebThe shield was found close to the Late Iron Age settlement of Old Sleaford, a Late Iron Age ‘complex ditch settlement’ of large extent, which shows evidence for fairly dense occupation, and specialist activities such as coin production. Sleaford is located east of the Ancaster gap, with access to the fens, and through to the Trent Valley.
